Franz was deported to Auschwitz in 1943 and, after one failed attempt to escape from Ravensbrück, she succeeded in escaping from a camp near Wittenberge in 1945. Growing up, she performed and danced as a member of the family troupe. PHILOMENA FRANZ Philomena Franz was born in 1922 into a Sinti family of musicians and performers, with long-established roots in Germany. Her literary life’s work was recognized in 2012 with the Pro Litteris Prize and again in 2017 with the City of Zurich’s Recognition Prize. She has also received several awards, including the Bündner Literaturpreis and the Anna Göldi Human Rights Prize. Mariella Mehr was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Basel for her journalistic commitment to oppressed minorities. English: Born in Zurich in 1947, as a Yenish child she was separated from her mother at an early age and grew up in homes, with foster parents, in reformatories, as a victim of the so-called Hilfswerk für die Kinder der Landstrasse. He was also awarded a Diploma of Excellence at the 2018 Roma Excellence Gala for his “remarkable contribution to the development and promotion of Roma culture and identity.” Sude has published three books, ,Scărarul” (The Ladder Maker, Grinta, 2014), ,Chiar Nu” (Really No, Eurostampa, 2016), and ,Povești” (Stories, Centrul Național de Cultură a Romilor, 2018). His poetry has earned him eighteen awards, such as first place in the “Bronislawa Wajs” International Contest of Literary Creation and Translation, celebrating the centenary of the Roma (1919–2019), and fourth place in the 2018 manuscript competition organized by the Centrul Național de Cultură a Romilor–Romano Kher (National Center for Roma Culture–Romano Kher) in collaboration with the Romanian government. He currently works as a night security guard at a public school while being a third-year student at the University of Bucharest, pursuing a major in Romani and a minor in Romanian. EMIL-IULIAN SUDE Emil-Iulian Sude is one of the first award-winning poets of Roma ethnicity in Romania.
